May 4th, 1942

The four day battle of the Coral Sea begins. This is the first fleet action where aircraft carriers engaged each other. By the end of the battle, the United States would end up losing 3 ships along with the carrier, USS Lexington with 656 killed.

Meat Rationing ends for all meats, except for beef steaks and beef roasts. Rationing as a whole would not end until 1946. England's rationing would not end until 1954 when cheese and meat came off ration.

The 8th Infantry and 82nd Airborne encounter and free the Wöbbelin concentration camp. Inside the camp are almost 5,000 prisoners, many who were taken out of other camps to prevent their liberation
